One of the tours we took was a sunrise and bike tour at the top of Haleakala Volcano. It's an inactive Volcano now but people speculate it will erupt once again.
We had to be picked up by the tour company at 2:50 AM in the morning! OUCH. Since we were going to the top of the volcano that reaches 10,023 feet in elevation they advised us to wear layers (thank goodness I had long pants and sweatshirts w me) and they also provide thick rain gear. We stood waiting for the sun to rise for a while. It was so incredibly beautiful watching the sun rise from under the clouds. You can see in the first picture that we were ABOVE the clouds! Pretty COOL! Then we biked down the side of the volcano (on a paved road). The second picture is of a rare flower only grown in Hawaii and some other island. The third picture is inside of the crater. We had a great time.
Our tour guide, "Uncle Russ" showed us a great time with his "Ring-a-ding-ding" enthusiasm. He referred to "ring-a-ding-ding" as getting down the mountain quick....so often he'd say "let's ring-a-ding-ding" and Lonny and I were named the "ring-a-ding-dingers". So we loved "ring-a-ding-dinging".
My sister Lorna Kay said that her and her husband Gary actually CAMPED in the crater over Christmas in the last 90's and watch the sunrise. I couldn't even imagine CAMPING above the clouds. Awesome!

The oldest rocks above sea level on Haleakala are about 910,000 years old. Haleakala volcano’s last eruption was about 1790, near Makeana on the southern part of the island of Maui. The summit of Haleakala is 10,023 feet above sea level. It is the highest point of Maui. The size of Haleakala National Park is 28,665 acres.
